Where to begin other than I thought I would BLOG every month and the life took a hold of that thought and threw it in the trash. My concern was that I would bore readers with a bunch of design “fluff” with blah blah blah and who finds that inspiring? Certainly, not me! Recently I have had something happen in my design career that I truly did not expect. Let me tell you a bit about it.
It all started when I created an account on Houzz.com, it is a great website (that is free) where homeowners gain access to millions of home pictures uploaded by designers, contractors, etc of homes they have worked on. It truly is an incredible place I find for inspiration and who knew…clients!
I received a call many months ago by a man I will simply call Adonis. He tells me he saw my photo and projects on Houzz.com and loved what he saw, that he liked my style. His plan was to purchase a home in the Seattle area (where I live), renovate it, use has a vacation home and eventually sell it as a profitable investment. After many many calls and looking at several different homes on-line, he found one that fit the bill but sadly was sold before he had his chance. I told him that it could be a sign and to not push the idea of a home in Seattle that when the time is right that special house that he wants will become available and it did not make sense to waste his time and money to come to Seattle and pay me to go with him to look at house. What am I stupid? I just turned down money! However, those who know me know that I am a straight up person and very honest so to me it would be inconceivable to get paid for basically (in my eyes) “nothing”. This was something Adonis is not used to as he does most of his business with individuals who are constantly looking to make a buck off of him regardless if he benefits or not. I must have unintentionally impressed him.
So, who is this Adonis? Well, he is an appropriately named tall black man who has pulled himself up from the depths of poverty and is now a very successful wealthy business man. Yes, yes….he does have 2 carat diamond earrings and ALWAYS is dressed to kill. He jested that when he comes to Seattle he is treated like royalty because everyone here thinks he is either a basketball or football player because of his color, size and display (of well) money. “Why don’t they think that I am an intelligent business man or doctor?” asks Adonis. Valid point and I could not agree more…but can you say “stereo type”?! Which is a bummer, but sadly a fact.
I am a 5’2” white women who basically has one token black friend…there I said it. This is not because I have racial issues, I honestly just have white people in my circle of friends. But then I meet this character, and believe me he IS a character, who is funny, OCD, caring, honest, demanding, self taught and someone I just generally like. Whenever my phone rings I see his name I am compelled by curiosity to answer the phone because I never know what he will say, it’s great! He has taught me a few things and I’m sure will continue to do so as I am him.
Where are things now? He has purchased a home in Georgia and against the direction/concerns of friends on hiring a designer who lives across the country, he hired me anyway. Wow, what a HUGE compliment! We have not even met in person!! We are about to sign a design agreement (I won’t go into specifics but let’s just say Adonis and I have had some differences of opinions when it comes to working hours as I think he works too much and he thinks I don’t work enough) and we will start putting all of the design pieces we have been in discussion the last couple of months for his traditional Georgian House that we plan on converting to a Contemporary……wait for it….……”panty dropping” house! Yes, you ready that correctly and yes that is a direct quote from the client himself. See why I can’t help but answer his call?! He is one of the most interesting people I know.
So stay tuned as I plan on blogging about his most insane, unique, exciting experience as Adonis and I discover together why life has chosen to put us in each others path.
